Annual Meeting

NH Minority Health Coalition 2006 Annual Awards Presented at Ceremony in Manchester

The New Hampshire Minority Health Coalition presented its Annual Awards on Tuesday, April 25, during a ceremony at PSNH in Manchester, New Hampshire. "We are proud to recognize the outstanding efforts of an organization, two individual leaders in the community and a staff person this year, said Jazmin Miranda-Smith, Executive Director of the Coalition. Each of the honorees have worked tirelessly to promote health equity in New Hampshire."

The Community Health Investment Award recognizes an organization that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in increasing access to health care for underserved minority populations. This year's honoree, the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester, has worked to overcome barriers and increase access to health care for minorities, immigrants and refugees. Peter Janelle, the organization's Executive Director, accepted the award.

The Sandra T. Hicks Minority Health Champion Awards are presented in honor of the Coalition's founder, who provided the leadership, vision, time and energy to establish the organization to eliminate health disparities in New Hampshire. The recipients of this award both exemplify Sandra's spirit and exhibit a high level of leadership and devotion to minority health issues. This year, Florentina Dinu, Medical Interpretation Services Coordinator for the Southern NH Area Health Education Center, and Delmy Bonilla, Peer Educator for the NH REACH 2010 Initiative at the Coalition, received the Minority Health Champion Award.

Finally, the Coalition recognized an exceptional individual who has worked for over forty years to improve the health of her community. Reverend Doctor Bertha Perkins, the Pastor of the New Fellowship Baptist Church in Nashua, received a Lifetime Achievement Award to honor her lifetime of service to New Hampshire's minority communities.

The New Hampshire Minority Health Coalition is a statewide nonprofit organization committed to closing the gaps in health disparities among New Hampshire's racial, ethnic and linguistic populations. The Coalition was founded in 1993 by Sandra T. Hicks and a small group of engaged citizens to identify underserved populations in the State with barriers to accessing appropriate health care, advocate for adequate and appropriate services and educate and empower these populations to be active participants in their own health care. The organization accomplishes its mission through direct services to educate and empower people in the community to be more effective at accessing, utilizing and managing their own health care, and cost-effective cultural competency programs designed to help providers of health care, social service agencies and businesses understand the importance of cultural diversity.
