It is sometimes hard for me to believe I have lived for 50 years! I have done a variety of things during that time. Most of my adult life has been spent raising 5 sons. They are all in college and beyond and all are doing well. While the boys were growing up, I was active in a variety of causes including foster care, parent education, and League of Women Voters.

When our youngest children began school, I also returned to school to study nursing. I had completed a Bachelor degree in Cultural Anthropology before having children and added the Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1989. I worked as a nurse for 10 years working in acute care and home care. I then returned to school and earned a Master of Science in Nursing in 1999. For the Master's degree I conducted research on the meaning of hope to people in the Dominican Republic.

I have lived all my life in the United States but have traveled in other countries. During my Master's research, I lived for 5 weeks in the Dominican Republic. I returned to the DR for 5 weeks in 2000. I have also lived in Mexico for 2 months studying Spanish and in India for 2 months as an exchange student. I would love to visit Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, actually, any country in Latin America. I speak Spanish in addition to English.

My work at the Minority Health Coalition has been a huge challenge! I am learning how to design and manage a budget, how to hire and manage people, and how to advocate for quality health care for everyone. I am learning how to work with a wide variety of organizations and people. And I am learning about myself. I love the challenge. In fact, I am discovering that when I am not in a steep learning curve, I get bored.
